Support Americana’s Summer Youth Program

All proceeds support Americana Community Center’s Summer Youth Program, providing fun and engaging activities for 7 weeks during the summer to more than 200 refugee and immigrant youth to prevent summer learning loss. It costs $290 for us to provide programming to one child. Last year, there were over 50 youth on the waiting list. You can help get kids off the waiting list and into the program by registering for the race and sharing with friends and family.

For more information, contact Clare at (502)366-7813 or clare@americanacc.org.

The 24th Americana World Festival in Review

The Americana Community Center would like to thank each and every one of you for making this a memorable year!

This year we had amazing performances by The Monarchs, Appalatin, Swing ’39, Keltricity, Alma Gitana,The Afrophysicists, Patrick Stanley, Misha Feigin, Hot Brown Smackdown, Sipan, Flamenco Louisville, Louisville Old Time Square Association, Bhutanese Nepali Dancers, Ruric-Amari & Samovar Dance Co., and Al Hamsa Belly Dance.

The food vendors provided us with delicious food from all over the world. The craft vendors sold unique and lovely trinkets, instruments, housewares, and jewelry. Our community partners supplied attendees with very useful information about services they offer.  Lastly, I would like to thank the many volunteers who gave up their Saturday to help set up, take down, and work in the Kids Zone. The 24th Americana World Festival would not have been the same without all of you there, so thank you!

And thank you to Art Hoffman for putting together this lovely video of the festival. Enjoy!

23ND ANNUAL AMERICANA WORLD FESTIVAL MOVES TO IROQUOIS AMPHITHEATER

Louisville, KY. April 19, 2013 – The twenty-third annual Americana World Festival: “Where Louisville Meets the World”℠ will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Americana World Festival is a free, family-oriented event that brings together members of the local community to share and celebrate the cultural heritages of the Louisville Metro community and the neighborhoods surrounding Americana Community Center.

For the first time in its history the festival will be held at Iroquois Amphitheater in Iroquois Park, thanks to a new partnership between the amphitheater and Americana.

“Our mission is to engage and enrich, so we’re always looking to make our programming more diverse and make sure we have something that appeals to everyone,” said Mike Slaton, manager of Iroquois Amphitheater. Slaton said arts and international programmings were two of the areas of programming most in need of development, so hosting the festival was a perfect fit.

“One of the great things about the South End is it’s really one of the most diverse areas in Louisville,” said Slaton. “There are so many from the international community in the neighborhoods around us, so we reached out to see if there were things we could partner with Americana on.”

The festival not only brings more of the public to the amphitheater but also to a part of town many in the community only think they know.

“It’s wonderful for us to serve our immediate community and be an asset to draw people to the South End,” said Slaton. “Hopefully, this will help correct some misconceptions and show people that this is a more complex area than they thought.”

Each year, festival-goers enjoy a full day of performances, food, and fun. Entertainment this year will include local favorites AppalatinThe Monarchs, and all-lawyer band 100% Legal. A Kids Zone, sponsored by Passport Health Plan, will feature activities for children, such as face-painting, arts and craft s and games until 7 p.m. A variety of food and beverages will be sold by on-site vendors. International crafts and other goods will be available for purchase from local artists and vendors. Several community organizations and nonprofits will also be on-hand, as a service to the public. There will also be a raffle for prizes from several area businesses. The raffle grand prize will be $500 cash. Raffle tickets cost $1 each and can be purchased in advance at participating ValuMarket locations and at the festival on the day of the event at the Americana booth.
